About the Role

We are looking for a part-time Propulsion Engineer to lead analytical design, performance modelling and system-level integration of propulsion solutions for our re-entry capsule. The role will combine RCS and main-propulsion sizing, thruster selection and placement, with strong emphasis on trajectory analysis and mission feasibility. You'll perform detailed propellant and performance calculations, evaluate trade-offs between different options and translate propulsion requirements into practical subsystem specifications (fuel mass, feed/pressurisation, valves, actuators and mounting/structural considerations). Knowledge of propellant chemistry and control of thrust profiles is highly desirable, as propulsion choices will directly shape mission performance and safety.

Key Responsibilities

As part of a small and rapidly evolving team, you will:

  • Perform propulsion requirement calculations and fuel-mass budgeting for mission scenarios
  • Select and size thrusters (RCS and main), determine optimal placement and define feed/pressurisation and actuation needs (valves, regulators, isolation)
  • Analyse propellant performance, burn rates and thrust curves, applying chemistry knowledge to fuel selection
  • Perform trajectory simulations and orbital mechanics calculations to assess mission profiles
  • Use Python-based tools and orbital mechanics modules to model system behaviour and outcomes
  • Provide clear reports and recommendations to support design decisions
  • Adapt quickly to changing requirements in a start-up environment

Skills & Qualifications

  • Preferred applicants will have/be studying towards a BEng/BSc, MSc or PhD in Aerospace Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Spacecraft Engineering or related fields
  • Strong background in propulsion theory, fuel chemistry and orbital mechanics
  • Proficiency with Python for trajectory modelling and simulation
  • Experience with propulsion analysis tools (e.g., MATLAB, STK, GMAT) is highly desirable
  • Location: preference for candidates based in Leicester or the Midlands with ability to commute

Additional Notes
